Air Fryer Onion Rings

Air fry onion rings at 200°C (392°F) for 9 minutes.

Onion rings are one of the more satisfying things to make from scratch because the difference from the frozen version is so obvious — a real crunch, and you can taste the onion instead of just batter. Good bar-food snack for a night in.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, in 1 cm rings
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • Salt, oil spray

Steps

  1. Separate the onion into individual rings.
  2. Dust them with flour seasoned with salt and paprika, shaking off any excess so the coating doesn't clump.
  3. Dip each ring into the beaten egg, then into the breadcrumbs.
  4. Dip again into the egg and back into the breadcrumbs for a second, thicker layer that holds together better in the fryer.
  5. Arrange the rings in a single layer and spray with oil.
  6. Air fry at 200°C for 5 minutes.
  7. Flip and air fry another 4 minutes (9 minutes total) until the coating is deep golden and crisp all the way around.
  8. Serve immediately while the coating is at its crunchiest.

Tip: Use the small inner rings for another recipe. The big ones fry best.

Serving & Storage

Serving: Serve alongside burgers or on their own with a dipping sauce as a bar-style snack.

Storage: Best eaten fresh; reheat any leftovers in the air fryer at 200°C for 3 min to recrisp, since the microwave will make the coating chewy.
